How to Implement the Real Jesus in Your Church: Start With the Board (Week 1)

by Dr. Adam Grill

Welcome to Week 1 of our special October series: Implementing the Real Jesus in Your Church.

Across the Christian world, pastors and church leaders share a common, deeply rooted desire: they want to see their congregations truly transformed, deeply grounded in Scripture, and actively engaged in the Great Commission. Yet, many church boards and leadership teams find themselves stuck in the treadmill of institutional management: budget reviews, facility maintenance, and administrative calendars: while true spiritual multiplication takes a back seat.

If we want to build a vibrant, thriving church culture that honors the Jesus model of discipleship, we have to start at the very beginning. We have to start at the top.

In this first installment, we are exploring why real church transformation begins with your governing body, how the 2 Timothy 2:2 blueprint changes everything, and how a small leadership group of 8 to 12 people can spark a movement that reaches an entire church of 100 people very quickly.

Why Leadership Must Encounter the Real Jesus First

It is impossible to lead people where you have not yet walked. Too often, church programs are designed for the congregation while the governing board acts purely as an administrative engine. But Jesus never called us to build mere religious institutions; He called us to make disciples.

When we developed the Real Jesus series and the principles in my book Multiplying Disciples, one core conviction guided every page: discipleship is caught, not just taught.

If your church board: your elders, deacons, council members, or ministry directors: is not actively experiencing deep, authentic discipleship together, you cannot expect the broader congregation to catch that fire. When church leaders personally encounter the Real Jesus through unhurried time in His Word, honest spiritual accountability, and mutual prayer, something remarkable happens. The board room transforms from a boardroom of corporate governance into a room of spiritual awakening.

"And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others." : 2 Timothy 2:2

Notice the progression in Paul’s instruction to Timothy. Paul invested in Timothy; Timothy was instructed to entrust those truths to reliable people; and those people would, in turn, teach others. That is four generations of multiplication contained in a single verse. It is the exact blueprint Jesus modeled with His twelve disciples.

The Multiplication Model: Moving Beyond Addition

Many modern church programs rely on addition. You invite 50 people to a class, 30 show up, and at the end of eight weeks, you hope a few of them feel more knowledgeable about the Bible.

While educational classes have their place, Jesus modeled multiplication. He didn't start a mass seminar for thousands on Day One; He invested deeply in a small core of ordinary men. He ate with them, walked with them, corrected them, and showed them the kingdom in action.

When you implement a robust church discipleship program, you aren't just filling heads with facts: you are forming lives. And multiplication mathematics are staggering when applied faithfully to a local church body.

Week 1 Action Plan: Starting with Your Church Board (8–12 Leaders)

How do you practically begin implementing the Real Jesus across your entire church? You don't launch a church-wide campaign on Sunday morning. You start with your board.

Here is your exact blueprint for Week 1:

1. Gather Your Governing Body

Identify your core leadership group: typically 8 to 12 people comprising your elders, deacons, or governing board. Frame this gathering not as an extraordinary extra committee meeting, but as the foundational spiritual engine of the church.

2. Walk Through Real Jesus Book 1 Together

Commit your next few board meetings: or a dedicated monthly retreat: to working through Real Jesus Book 1 together. Do this not as supervisors evaluating curriculum, but as disciples sitting at the feet of Jesus. Share personal convictions, confess weaknesses, and encourage one another in the faith.

3. Establish Authentic Accountability

Use this time to model what genuine Christian fellowship looks like. Ask vulnerable questions: What did Scripture teach you this week? Where did you struggle to obey? How can we pray for your family? When leaders experience grace and truth in community, defensiveness drops and spiritual hunger rises.

The Math of Multiplication: Reaching 100 People Quickly

Let’s look at how powerful this leadership-first approach becomes by the end of Book 1. Imagine your church board or leadership team consists of 10 people:

  • Month 1 (Leadership Phase): Those 10 leaders go through Real Jesus Book 1 together, experiencing personal renewal, biblical grounding, and simple disciple-making tools.
  • Month 2 (First Ripple): Each of those 10 leaders takes what they have learned and disciples 2 new people in a small group setting using the curriculum. Now, 30 people (10 leaders + 20 new disciples) are actively engaged.
  • Month 3 (Second Ripple): Those 20 newly discipled believers each step out and disciple 2 people of their own. Suddenly, another 40 people are added to the stream.
  • Month 4 (Congregational Impact): The movement expands naturally into the broader church community, quickly surpassing 100 people actively growing in discipleship: all originating from a single board meeting of 10 leaders!

This is not a theoretical church growth gimmick; it is the organic, biblical rhythm of the Kingdom of God. When leadership ignites, the entire church catches the spark.

Practical Tools for the Journey

Starting a Bible study group and tracking spiritual progress can sometimes feel overwhelming for busy leaders. That is why modern tools make all the difference.

With platforms like the Disciple Maker app, church leaders and small group facilitators have access to structured Bible-based courses, offline accessibility for areas with limited internet, and intuitive progress tracking tools. Whether you are mentoring a new believer or guiding your elders through Book 1, having the right resources keeps everyone aligned, connected, and moving forward together.

Looking Ahead: The Ripple Effect

Starting with the board is just the beginning. In the weeks ahead in our October series, we will watch how this discipleship mandate moves from the governing body into the wider congregation (Week 3), and finally ripples out into the surrounding community to transform neighborhoods for Christ (Week 4).

If you are a church leader ready to see your board renewed and your church mobilized, there is no better time to begin.
